April 3, 2009what do you think of Schizophrenia? read my paper and tell me what you think.
Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia: a mental disorder that makes it difficult to tell the difference between real and unreal emotions, to have the ability to think logically, to have proper emotional responses, and to behave normally during social interactions. This is a disorder that affects 1% of the world’s population. It can also be mistaken for Autism in children.
Symptoms to Schizophrenia can vary because of age and gender. They can manifest quickly or take as long as years to develop. The most common ones to show up first are the feeling of tenseness and having trouble sleeping. These can cause you to become withdrawn and isolated. These can cause you trouble with making friends.
As the illness progresses, the psychotic symptoms start to manifest. These can be that you show no emotion whatsoever, weird motor functions even though the environment did not cause them, having false beliefs that have nothing to do with reality.
Other symptoms are hearing, seeing, etc. things that are not there, and having thoughts jump from one subject to another. Symptoms can vary from each type of schizophrenia. There are four types of schizophrenia. They are:
• Catatonic • Paranoid • Disorganized • and Residual To be treated for Schizophrenia, you need to stay at hospital for safety reasons. There are antipsychotic medicines that can change the balance of chemicals in the brain. These help control the symptoms. These can be effective but, like all medicines, there are side effects.
These side effects can be treated and will not prevent the patient from continuing treatment. The common side effects of the medicine are sleepiness and weight gain. All them can be taken care of by a different medicine. There is a rare side effect though. It is called Tardive Dyskinesia; this is a movement disorder that causes people to move intentionally.
Two local places in the tri-state area are North Key Medical Center and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. You can find treatment in these places if you have the disorder.
Causes of the disorder aren’t really known. Scientists have speculations, but they don’t know. Some of them think it is caused by an underdeveloped brain, that which cannot process information.
They also think that genetics play a role in it. It is apparent that people who have family members with the disease are more likely to get the disorder themselves. There is also the belief that events in a person’s life can cause Schizophrenia. If problems, illness, happen the infant in the womb is more likely to get it.
This disorder has a lot of interesting facts. I liked writing about it. I was interested to find that a delusion of grandeur and persecution was a symptom of schizophrenia. Perhaps it is no surprise that Adolph Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany, had this disorder. This should show you the seriousness of the disorder and how, if uncontrolled, it is horrible for not only the person, but the entire world around is affected as well.
But with medicine, it is harmless. But as history shows, gone untreated, it could leave catastrophic results.
